Examples of Our Success Stories

A colleague asked for my help getting an outstanding teacher and healer, a Swami, to the United States. They had explored various options prior to coming to me, without success. I suggested an alternative approach—applying for an Extraordinary Ability visa. Although a Swami is a somewhat unconventional candidate for this type of visa, this approach worked, allowing Swamiji's numerous followers throughout the U.S. to benefit from his wisdom and guidance.

A distraught mom came to me on a Sunday, because her 18-year-old daughter had been detained by ICE. She had missed her hearing several years prior, and had an order of deportation entered against her. If we didn't reopen her case before she turned 19 two weeks later, she would have had to leave the country and would not have been able to return for ten years. I was able to cancel the deportation order against her in time and got her case back on track. I then convinced ICE to release my client from detention, and she eventually left the U.S. to attend a visa interview at a Consulate and returned several weeks later as a Lawful Permanent Resident.

A young man sought my advice when he found himself in removal proceedings. He was having problems with his U.S. citizen wife, who had been in the process of petitioning for his "green card." He wanted to continue living in the United States, but no longer wanted to stay married to his spouse. After spending some time getting to know my new client, I discovered that he was an accomplished ice dancer and a talented coach. I filed a petition with the USCIS to recognize my client as a coach of extraordinary ability, and when that petition was approved, I asked the Immigration Judge to allow him to leave the country voluntarily. That request was granted, and my client went to the U.S. Consulate in his home country, obtained his temporary extraordinary ability visa (O-1), and was back in Virginia coaching aspiring ice dancers a few weeks later. We subsequently succeeded in obtaining permanent resident status for this young man, also based on his extraordinary ability (EB-1). He is now a U.S. citizen.

A family was desperate when they scheduled their first meeting with me. They had lost their asylum case in Immigration Court, and their appeals to the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) and the Federal Court of Appeals had been denied. I was able to persuade the BIA to reopen their case, reconsider the decision, and return the matter to the Immigration Court. In Immigration Court, we presented additional evidence that convinced the Judge to grant asylum. The family are now U.S. citizens.

A woman needed my help to become a permanent resident (a "green card" holder). Decades earlier, she had been unlawfully deported to her native country, which at the time was in the midst of a political and social crisis. The woman's two young daughters and husband, who had a pending asylum application, remained in the United States. The family's attorney had made multiple requests to allow the woman to return to the U.S. legally, but all their efforts failed. In desperation, the woman came back without permission, to be with her daughters. Although by then her husband and kids had already won their asylum case, she remained in legal limbo because of the prior deportation. Through legal arguments and advocacy, I was able to persuade an Immigration Judge to reopen my client's old deportation case, cancel her deportation order, and grant her permanent residence.

A couple contacted me to get advice on their difficult situation. Both spouses had fled genocide in their native country, where they had lost both of their families, and could not imagine returning there. The wife had been granted asylum, but prior to this the husband had been given Voluntary Departure by an Immigration Judge. The man knew that he would be killed if he went back to his country, so he remained in the U.S. Because he had failed to leave the U.S., his voluntary departure grant automatically became a deportation order. The spouses' previous attorney attempted to reopen the case and cancel the order, but he was not successful. This made it even more challenging to rectify the situation, since a person is only allowed to make one attempt to reopen a case. Despite the odds, I was able to overcome this obstacle, reopen the man's case, and cancel his deportation order. He is now a U.S. citizen.
